The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) contracts out Emterra Environmental for the pick-up of garbage and recycling in Royston.

Recycling Tips

You can help ensure that more materials are recycled by following these steps:

  1. Follow sorting instructions at the depot
  2. Empty and rinse containers
  3. Contain shredded paper inside a paper bag or box
  4. Flatten cardboard and remove plastic wrap from cardboard flats (staples and tape are acceptable)

What Can I Recycle?
Paper

Put into smaller blue box and recycle at curbside or depot.

Accepted:

  • Newspapers, inserts & flyers
  • Magazines, catalogues & phone books
  • Boxboard boxes
  • Paper egg cartons
  • Household paper
  • Envelopes (unless padded)
  • Paper bags
  • Shredded paper (contain in paper bag or box first)
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Gift cards
  • Paper gift wrap
  • Paper gift bags
  • Paper bags for pet food, flour, sugar, etc.
  • Paper carry-out beverage trays
  • Cores from paper towel and toilet tissue

Not accepted:

  • Hard and soft cover books
  • Paper towels, napkins, & tissues
  • Non-paper gift wrap & foil wrap
  • Rubber bands, ribbons & bows
  • Padded envelopes
  • Bags and boxes with foil liners
  • Plastic bags used to cover newspapers/flyers
Containers

Put into blue box and recycle at curbside or depot.

Accepted:

  • Plastic bottles, jars & jugs
  • Plastic trays & clamshells
  • Plastic garden pots & seedling trays
  • Caps, tops, lids & pumps
  • Plastic or paper take-out cups, bowls & lids
  • Cartons for soup, milk, etc.
  • Metal cans
  • Aerosol cans (empty)
  • Foil wrap and take-out containers
  • Plastic packaging for toys, batteries, etc. (separate plastic from paper backing)
  • Spiral wound cans and lids for frozen juice concentrate, chips, etc.
  • Plastic pails less than 25L for laundry detergent, etc.
  • Plastic tubs for yogurt, margarine, etc.

Not accepted:

  • Plastic bags and overwrap
  • Hazardous waste
  • Glass
  • Electronics & appliances
  • Toys & games
  • Hangers, pots, pans & other scrap metal
  • Foam packaging
  • Chip or foil bags & candy wrappers
  • Stand up pouches
  • Packaging labeled biodegradable or compostable
  • Wiring, metal cords & hardware
  • Clothing, textiles & shoes
  • Food & yard waste
Glass

Drop-off only. Take to recycling depot.

Accepted:

  • Glass bottles – clear & coloured
  • Glass jars – clear & coloured
  • Return deposit containers for a refund
  • Put all lids with containers

Not accepted:

  • Dishes & cookware
  • Windows & mirrors
  • Light bulbs & fixtures
  • Ceramic products
Plastic Bags & Overwrap

Drop-off only. Take to recycling depot.

Accepted:

  • Plastic bags
  • Outer bags & protective wrap
  • Bags for groceries, produce, dry bulk foods, frozen vegetables, water softener, salt, garden products, newspapers, etc.
  • Overwrap for diapers, feminine hygiene products, paper towels & soft drink flats

Not accepted:

  • Crinkly wrap for tea, floral arrangements, etc.
  • Pasta & cereal bags, chip & snack bags, stand-up pouches
  • Zipper lock bags, garbage bags & kitchen stretch wrap
  • Plastic shipping envelopes & bubble packaging
Foam Packaging

Drop-off only. Take to recycling depot.

Accepted:

  • Foam meat trays (remove absorbent pad)
  • Foam take-out containers
  • Foam cushion packaging used to protect electronics, etc.

Not accepted:

  • Blue or pink foam insulation, packing chips & peanuts
  • Squishy or flexible foam & foam noodles
Hazardous Materials

Note that none of the following items can be included with your blue box recycling:

  • Batteries
  • Medical Syringes
  • Bleach or aerosol containers with any contents remaining
  • Compressed gas cylinders (eg: used propane cylinders)
  • Containers for paint, motor oil, vehicle lubricants or antifreeze
  • Containers for pesticides with the words DANGER, WARNING or POISON and precautionary octagon or diamond symbols with skull and crossbones
