Rural Community, Recreation, and Arts & Culture Grants

Support for community programs, events, and infrastructure

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) provides annual grants to eligible non-profit organizations that help strengthen rural communities, recreation, arts and culture throughout the Comox Valley.

Funding is available for organizations delivering programs, events, services, or infrastructure that benefit Comox Valley residents.

These grants are reviewed annually. Funding is not guaranteed from year to year and is not intended to provide ongoing operational support.

Grant categories

Organizations may apply for the grant category that best matches their proposed activity or project.

  • Rural Community Grant
    Supports rural community events, programs, and/or infrastructure, or initiatives that benefit rural Comox Valley residents
  • Recreation Grant
    Supports recreational programs, events, and/or infrastructure within the Comox Valley. 
  • Arts & Culture Grant
    Supports arts and cultural programs and events within the Comox Valley

Eligibility requirements

To be considered, applicants must meet the following mandatory eligibility criteria:

  • Be based in the Comox Valley Regional District, or provide a service which primarily benefits Comox Valley residents
  • Comply with all relevant Comox Valley Regional District grant bylaws
  • Be a registered non-profit organization in good standing
  • Provide a society registry number
  • Have an active board of directors
  • Ensure that board members with voting rights do not benefit personally from the grant

Only applications that meet these requirements will move forward to the evaluation process.

Organizations not eligible for these grants

Organizations that receive funding through any of the following services are not eligible for Rural Community, Arts & Culture, or Recreation Grants:

  • Service 670 – Hornby Island Community Hall
  • Service 672 – Baynes Sound Community Facilities Support 
  • Service 675 – Denman Island Community Facilities
  • Service 676 – Puntledge North Community Facilities Support

Rural Community Hall Grant

Community hall organizations that receive funding through the services listed above can apply for a Rural Community Hall Grant.

Before you apply

The online form cannot be saved and returned to later, so applicants are encouraged to prepare their information and documents before starting.

Review application questions

Required documents

  • Budget for the year the grant is being requested
  • Current year-to-date financial statements
  • Financial statements for the previous year
  • BC Societies Act registry report
  • Final/interim report

Organizations that received grant funds in the previous year will also be required to provide a report on how those funds were utilized.

Final/interim reports

If your organizations received CVRD grant funding in the previous 18 months, you must complete the online final/interim report.

The report must include:

  • A budget-to-actual cost reconciliation related for the grant-funded project or event
    (receipts are not required)
  • Photos of the project or event

After submitting your grant application, you will be directed to the the online final/interim report form.

Files must be no larger than 32 MB each. Accepted file types include gif, jpg, png, bmp, eps, tif, pict, psd, txt, rtf, html, odf, pdf, doc, docx, ppt, pptx, xls, xlsx, xml, avi, mov, mp3, ogg, wav, bz2, dmg, gz, jar, rar, sit, svg, tar, zip.

Process and timelines

  • Before October 15, 2026, at 4:30 pm
    Submit your completed online application
  • After submission
    You will receive an email confirming receipt of your application
  • January 2027
    Applications are reviewed by staff and considered by Electoral Areas Services Committee or Recreation Commission, as applicable. Additional information may be requested
  • April 2027
    All applicants are notified of the outcome. Successful applicants must sign a contract outlining the terms and conditions of their grant
  • May 2027
    Grant funding is issued to successful applicants after the signed agreement is received

Conditions of grant award

Organizations that receive funding must:

  • Use the grant only for the approved project or event
  • Acknowledge the Comox Valley Regional District in promotional materials, using wording such as “Proudly supported by the Comox Valley Regional District”
  • Provide a final or interim report when applying for another grant
  • Used grant funds within 18 months of receipt
  • Return any unused funds to the CVRD after 18 months

The CVRD reserves the right to request a report from any successful applicant, even if the organization is not applying for another grant.

Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy

Your personal information will be collected for the purpose of evaluating grant applications and distributing funds to successful applicants. Submitted grant applications may be published on CVRD public agendas or the website. Personal phone numbers and addresses will be redacted to maintain privacy; however, the names of administrators or society directors may be published. This information is being collected and used by the Comox Valley Regional District under section 26 (c) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
