Water Main Flushing FAQs

Water main flushing is a routine maintenance task for municipalities and regional districts where hydrants are opened to move water through underground pipes at high velocity. This "scouring" action removes natural sediment and mineral deposits that can build up over time. 

Water main flushing is essential for maintaining high water quality and verifying the integrity of our infrastructure. It clears out sediment from pipes and valves, ensures fire hydrants are operational, and extends the lifespan of the water distribution system. 

Water main flushing generally takes place over a two-month period every spring between the hours of 8am to 4 pm. Notice of water main flushing is provided through our website, social media, local newspaper updates, and roadside signage. Yes, the water is safe to drink throughout the process. The water may appear "milky" or "cloudy”, and while visually unappealing, this does not pose a health risk.

Limit indoor water use and avoid using hot water and doing laundry. 

Wait until flushing is finished for the day and run a cold-water tap (a bathtub or outside hose bib is best) for 10–15 minutes. If it doesn't clear, wait 30 minutes and try again. 

You may experience a slight drop in water pressure while flushing is occurring on your street. Pressure will return to normal as soon as the flushing is done. 

Cloudy water is caused by tiny air bubbles becoming entrained in the water during the flushing process. Fill a glass with water and let it sit; if the bubbles rise to the top and the water clears, the milkiness is just air.

No, flushing does not affect your personal water meter or your bill. 

If you have a whole-house water softener or filtration system, we recommended bypassing it during flushing hours.

While it looks like waste, this fast-moving water is serving a purpose: large volumes of high-velocity water is the only effective way to clean the inside of the pipes.
