History

Tom Brigham dedicated Maple Park in the 1970's to protect a magnificent big leaf maple (Acer macrophyllum) tree, which is believed to be well over 400 years old. The park was established to ensure that the maple would be kept as heritage tree. Around 2008, the tree suffered major storm damage and most of it fell, however the rootstock is feeding new regrowth. The drama of the fallen tree is evident.

Information

Maple Park offers beautiful vistas over Morrison Marsh, a rich haven of bio-diversity and tranquil ambiance that invites nature viewing. These features are to be protected to ensure “spiritual” use of the park as envisioned by the land’s former owner.

Location

Take the 10 minute ferry to Denman Island from Buckley Bay, 25 minutes south of Courtenay. After unloading, stay to the right at the top of the hill and follow Denman Road to East Road which hugs the scenic shoreline. Turn right onto McFarlane Road. Enter along the footpath located between 9521 McFarlane Road and 4555 East Road. The land to either side of the path is private property so please stay to the trail.
