History

In 2017 the HIRRA Parks Committee brought the proposal of a formalized trail running along the Gull Road right-of-way (between Fowler and St. John's Point Road) to the CVRD due to community request.  A trail already existed between Fowler Road and Maclean Road that had fairly consistent usage by the local community but it was impassable for a few months of the year due to standing water. Public consultation with the immediate neighbourhood took place and this trail project had almost unanimous support.

In 2019 the HIRRA Parks Committee made the decision to only improve the existing trail between Fowler and Maclean Road in 2020 as they felt that the cost to build the entire trail would put unnecessary stain on their reserve budget funds.  They felt they could re-open the full Gull Road Trail discussion in the future if budgets allowed.  The CVRD supported this decision.

Early in 2020 the HIRRA Parks Committee approached the CVRD with the idea to apply for a new grant opportunity (the Active Transportation Infrastructure Grant) to help with the cost of the trail construction. This provincial grant used to be the Bike BC Grant but was changed to include funding towards multi-use paths that connect into existing trail networks. The Gull Road Greenway Project fit that description very well, connecting Tralee Park with the Hornby Roadside Trail, Tribune Bay Provincial Park and to other important community amenities without having to share the dusty gravel roads with cars.  The granting body agreed as the CVRD was awarded the grant in spring 2020.  The grant would cover up to 70% of the project costs and allow us to build the entire length of the trail (Fowler Road to St. John's Point Road) for roughly the same cost as fixing up the existing trail between Fowler and Maclean Roads.

Information

The Gull Road Greenway is a 900 meter long, multi-use trail that runs along the unopened Gull Road allowance.  The trail connects Fowler Road and the CVRD's Tralee Park with Maclean Road, St. John's Point Road, the Hornby Roadside Trail and Tribune Bay Provincial Park.  The 2.2 meter wide trail is suitable for walkers, cyclists and equestrians and meanders through a mixed, second-growth forest of Douglas-fir and Cedar.
