Odour Notification: Pollution Control Centre - August 19, 2025
After two weeks of intensive effort, stress and overtime by the CVRD wastewater operators, the CVWPCC plant process issue is nearing resolution.
The equalization basin (primary source of odour) was last used on Saturday night and was cleaned out yesterday. Based on the plant effluent (water discharged to the ocean) quality and other parameters, the issues that have plagued the system since late July are almost resolved.
The additional time and effort required from our skilled and diligent operators to resolve this situation also uncovered several previously unknown odour sources that we are now working to cover, and which should help to further reduce facility odors during normal operation.
It is now clear that the plant upset issue was caused by a confluence of factors, including the change in a key chemical used to help, but also due to an equipment failure at one of the pump stations that led to overgrowth of undesirable bacteria at the facility. Steps are being taken to ensure that neither of these situations happen again.
We thank you for your patience during this challenging time.
