The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) has launched two new transit fare programs aimed at enhancing transit affordability and accessibility for residents in need. The new Emergency Transit Assistance Program (ETAP) and CVRD GO Program are designed to support low-income residents who are not eligible or able to access existing provincial transit discount programs. These two initiatives underscore the CVRD’s commitment to social equity, community partnerships, and fiscal responsibility.
“Ensuring affordable and accessible transit is a priority for the CVRD Board,” says CVRD Chair Will Cole-Hamilton. “These new fare programs reflect our ongoing commitment to building strong community partnerships and supporting the well-being of all residents, particularly those who fall through the cracks of existing provincial assistance.”
The Emergency Transit Assistance Program
Offered in partnership with United Way BC, the ETAP will distribute up to 5,000 free single ride transit tokens annually through local community organizations. This program is specifically targeted at residents in urgent need of transportation for emergency, employment, education, medical, and other essential purposes.

The CVRD GO Program
The CVRD GO Program offers a 50 per cent discount on 30-day transit passes for up to 150 low-income qualified residents over a six-month period, helping those who require more regular transit access but do not qualify for provincial discount programs such as the BC Bus Pass. The CVRD will work with local community organizations to target this program towards residents in need.

These new these programs will be monitored through regular reporting to the Board and community partners to assess impacts and explore opportunities for future enhancements.
