The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) Recreation team will be closing the Comox Valley Aquatic Centre for annual maintenance from June 27 until September 7, 2026. During this time, the Sports Centre will remain fully open with the summer schedule running from June 29 until September 6.
“This closure is a good time to complete important infrastructure upgrades and required facility maintenance,” says Jennifer Zbinden, Senior Manager of Recreation Services. “This maintenance is essential to maintain our assets, reduce the potential for further unscheduled service interruptions, and decrease the CVRD’s overall greenhouse gas emissions impact. We understand the value of access to year-round recreation is to our guests, so having one of the facilities open while the other is going through upgrades is a top priority.”
Planned upgrades include:
- Pool boiler replacement with air source heat pumps and heat exchangers
- Pool area air handling unit replacement and new ducting
- UV reactor maintenance (all pools)
- Personal lift maintenance
- Roof and skylight replacement
- Acoustic panel replacement (pool and lobby)
- Steam generator maintenance
- Pools & Water Systems
- Basins drained and cleaned
- Filters and surge tanks chemically treated and cleaned
- Water slide maintenance – replacing joint bolts and repainting/treating the outside of the slide
- New main door entry system
- Interior painting
- Landscaping improvements
- Parking lot line painting
These upgrades and improvements will cost approximately $3.6 million. This investment is timed to replace aging equipment at the end of its useful life, ensuring that funds aren’t spent any earlier than necessary. This project will improve the Aquatic Centre’s environmental performance and support goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while also being financially responsible. These upgrades will also extend the overall life of the facility, helping preserve its long-term reliability and functionality.
Newer equipment also means the facility will be more comfortable with improved humidity control and air circulation. Less emissions and improved operations will be a great benefit to the users of the Aquatic Centre.
