Tour the Treatment Plant and Learn About the Next Stage of Liquid Waste Planning

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) is inviting residents to learn more about the next stage of wastewater treatment planning for the Comox Valley Sewer System at a public open house on March 3 at the wastewater treatment plant.

The CVRD is moving into Stage 3 of their Liquid Waste Management Plan, which guides how wastewater is collected, moved and treated for Courtenay, Comox and the K’ómoks First Nation, helping ensure the system operates safely and reliably for decades to come.

Stages 1 and 2 selected a preferred level of treatment for the wastewater facility and option for sewer conveyance improvements. Stage 3 will confirm the upgrades required at the wastewater treatment plant to achieve the preferred level of treatment, along with projected costs and timing. Current estimates show that the required improvements will cost $113.4 million – sewer fees will increase over the next several years to help support funding this project and keep the costs of borrowing more sustainable in the coming years. Borrowing for the next phase of treatment plant upgrades is expected to result in a $220-240/household/year increase by 2032.

“This next stage of this planning process is about transparency, costs and long-term planning,” said Kris La Rose, CVRD Senior Manager of Water and Wastewater Services. “We’re sharing what we know about the necessary wastewater treatment upgrades, projected costs, and timing, and we want to hear from the community before the plan is finalized.”

As part of the Open House - treatment plant tours will be available.
