Results of Referendum on the South Sewer Project

The referendum held June 18, 2016 to determine whether the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) should establish a service to provide a new centralized wastewater collection system and water resource recovery facility in the south region of the CVRD serving residents within Royston and Union Bay including Kilmarnock, did not pass.

 Voters had the ability to cast ballots on the advance voting day, at two polls on referendum day and by mail. Those eligible to vote had to be 18 years of age or older, a Canadian citizen, a resident of BC for at least six months immediately preceding voting day, a resident or registered owner of property in parts of Royston and Union Bay including Kilmarnock, and not otherwise disqualified by law from voting. There are an estimated 2200 eligible voters in the south sewer service voting area and approximately 44 percent cast their votes. As a result of this assent voting process, the CVRD board may not adopt the service bylaws or loan authorization bylaw or enter into the partnership agreement for the south sewer project.

The CVRD board will now consider its next steps at its meeting on June 28, 2016.
