Repair of Transmission Pipe Requires Stage 3 Water Restrictions

The Comox Valley Water System will move to Stage 3 water restrictions beginning March 15 through to March 21, 2021 while a main water transmission pipe is repaired.

For the duration of the repair, the water system will rely on a smaller back-up pipe to supply water to the majority of the system. As this secondary pipe is much smaller and cannot handle peak water volumes, temporary Stage 3 water restrictions are required to ensure enough water is available for indoor use and firefighting. While outdoor watering is expected to be minimal at this time of year, residents are reminded that activities such as washing a vehicle at home or pressure washing driveways and boulevards are prohibited during Stage 3.

“Thanks to careful monitoring we were able to detect this leak early, which means that the repair can be scheduled outside of peak water use season and we’re able to avoid the highest level of restrictions,” said Kris La Rose, Senior Manager of Water and Wastewater Services. “We want the community to be aware this repair is underway. Following the guidelines for Stage 3 water restrictions and avoiding any excessive or unnecessary water use during this time will help ensure our secondary line can handle the volume of water being used.”

During Stage 3 water restrictions, residential lawn and garden watering with a sprinkler is not permitted at any time. Residents are also prohibited from pressure washing driveways and boulevards; filling a swimming pool, hot tub or garden pond; or washing a vehicle or boat other than in a commercial car wash or car dealership. Full guidelines for Stage 3 water restriction are available at www.comoxvalleyrd.ca/stage3.

Stage 3 restrictions apply to the Town of Comox, City of Courtenay, and the Comox Valley Water Local Service Area.

The Comox Valley Regional District is a federation of three electoral areas and three municipalities providing sustainable services for residents and visitors to the area. The members of the regional district work collaboratively on services for the benefit of the diverse urban and rural areas of the Comox Valley.
