Planning for Fireworks this Halloween? Don’t Forget to Get Your Fireworks Permit

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) is reminding residents that a permit is required prior to setting off fireworks for properties within Electoral Areas A, B, or C. Fireworks permits allow local fire departments to track and oversee fireworks use and help educate users on safe fireworks practices.

Fireworks in the electoral areas are only allowed to be set off on property you own or with the owner’s permission. The sale of fireworks in the CVRD will occur from October 24 until November 1 and must be from a commercially zoned retailer operating under the current fire regulations within the region.

"Fireworks at Halloween are a tradition for many families in the Comox Valley, and permitting helps our fire crews and bylaw staff stay informed and ready during these celebrations," says Amanda Yasinski, Senior Manager of Building and Bylaw Compliance. "As well as getting a permit, please also respect your neighbours and their animals and let them know beforehand if you are planning on setting off fireworks.”

What You Need to Know:

  • Permits are required prior to exploding or setting off fireworks (excluding sparklers, Christmas crackers, and caps for toy guns).
  • Permits are $10 and are available online or at the CVRD office (770 Harmston Avenue, Courtenay).
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age and older.
  • Permit holders will be authorized to set off fireworks within the CVRD Electoral Areas on property owned by the permit holder or by written consent from the property owner.
  • Failure to purchase a fireworks permit could result in a $500 fine.

Residents within the Town of Comox, City of Courtenay, or Village of Cumberland are advised to contact their municipality directly for fireworks regulations and permit requirements.
