CVRD Receives Grant for Pélxwikw / Goose Spit Climate Resiliency Project

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD), in partnership with K’ómoks First Nation, are excited to announce a grant of $275,580 received for the Pélxwikw / Goose Spit Climate Resiliency project. This funding comes from the Disaster Resilience and Innovation Funding (DRIF) program from the Province of BC.

This project will complete coastal, archeological, and ecological assessments of Goose Spit to protect residential areas and critical infrastructure from flood, sea-level rise, storm surge and erosion, and to help identify mitigation options.

“This is an exciting opportunity to work together to increase local climate adaptation and provide a better understanding of risks and solutions in a beloved location in the Comox Valley,” says Electoral Area B Director Richard Hardy. “The Pélxwikw / Goose Spit Climate Resiliency project will build an important knowledge base to improve local climate resilience and protect Goose Spit into the future.”

"Pélxwikw, meaning 'round on point' in the traditional K’ómoks language, refers to the smooth shape of the Spit and reflects our deep connection to this land. The K’ómoks and Pentlatch peoples gathered traditional medicines here, harvested salmon and shellfish, and used part of this land as a burial ground for respected leaders. This place has always been an important part of our people and way of life. By working with the Comox Valley Regional District and the Province of BC, we are taking steps to protect Pélxwikw from the impacts of climate change and preserve it for future generations."
- Chief Rempel, K’ómoks First Nation

The CVRD and K’ómoks First Nation are grateful to the BC Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness for providing project funding and were grateful to welcome Minister Kelly Greene recently to visit the location of this exciting project.
