Connected by Water Showcases Watershed Protection in Comox Valley

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) is proud to highlight Connected by Water, a watershed protection program designed to educate and inspire students in Comox Valley. Spanning from grades two to 11 in Comox Valley Schools (School District 71), educator tours provide shared knowledge about the watershed’s history and identify the interconnection of the natural system within our community. Students are engaged in the classroom, on-site adjacent to the watershed, and through tours of the Water Treatment Plant.

These engaging presentations not only align with the CVRD's Watershed Protection Plan but also serve to instill a deeper understanding of how all individuals play a role in safeguarding this vital natural resource. The educators’ approach encourages active participation, ensuring that students not only absorb facts about drinking water, but also understand the importance of responsible watershed care.

“It’s incredible how much wisdom young learners share to the educators about how to care for interrelated systems like our watershed,” explains Zoe Norcross-Nu'u, CVRD Watershed Protection Coordinator. “They really see the importance in a good relationship with our drinking water and all the natural systems that surround it, and that’s very encouraging.”

By empowering the next generation with knowledge and fostering a sense of responsibility, the CVRD remains committed to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Comox Lake watershed and the communities it serves.
