Accessibility highlighted during Access Awareness Day and Commuter Challenge Week

The second annual Comox Valley Commuter Challenge is happening next week and residents can win prizes for taking transit, walking, cycling, carpooling, scootering or working from home at least one day.

On Access Awareness Day the CVRD is inviting residents with mobility issues, scooters or strollers to tour a stationary bus and see how BC Transit is helping to overcome logistical barriers to riding transit. Participants will be welcome to try the ramp and courtesy seating and then provide feedback or ask questions about the new transit features designed to improve the rider experience.

The event will take place on Saturday, June 2, 2018 across from Lewis Park at the Simms Park bus stop between 10 am and noon. Coffee will be provided and attendees can enter to win a one-month transit pass and two passes to the Comox Valley Aquatic Centre.

Then, beginning on Monday, residents can win prizes for taking transit, walking, cycling, scootering, carpooling or working from home for at least one day during the week. This national event challenges workplaces across Canada to leave the car at home and think about how they can get to work without driving alone. Last year, the Comox Valley had the second highest number of workplaces registered in BC, with thousands of dollars worth of prizes given out to participants.

This year, participants can win a $200 gift card to Quality Foods, prizes from local sponsors and a grand prize of a VIA Rail trip across Canada valued at $1,000. Anyone who registers for the Commuter Challenge will also be entered to win a $20 gift card to a local business.

Besides winning prizes, there are many benefits to participating, such as less traffic congestion, reduced GHG emissions and improving health, not to mention saving money as gas prices keep increasing.

Workplaces are encouraged to register a team for free at www.commuterchallenge.ca. Just track the kilometres commuted and enter them online at the end of the week.
