We are accepting applications for two Waterworks Operator Students to join our Water Services team for a four-month term beginning in May. This position is a learning and support role assisting with the operation, maintenance, repair and upkeep of the water supply systems, equipment and related Regional District facilities and other specified local water service areas. Reporting to the Manager of Water Services and taking direction from the Senior Operator-Water Transmission and Distribution, the primary responsibilities of this role include:
- Installing, maintaining, monitoring, testing and cleaning waterworks equipment, water mains, hydraulic controls, facilities and other appurtenances required for the operation of the water systems;
- Inspecting connections to the water system and advising the Senior Operator or Manager of Water Services of water leaks;
- Taking water samples and/or performing water tests, including but not limited to chlorine residual, turbidity, and coliform group bacteria
- Reading water meters and recording readings. Inspecting connections to the water system and advising senior staff of any problems;
- Responding to routine enquiries and complaints from the general public regarding water quality and quantity;
- Keeping accurate records such as maintenance, inventory, water tests, as-built, etc.
Our ideal candidate is:
- Currently enrolled in a University or Technical College Program in a related discipline (ie. Water Engineering Technology);
- Mechanically inclined with some knowledge of the procedures, bylaws, methods, tools and equipment used in the operation, maintenance and repair of water systems;
- Team-oriented with strong interpersonal skills and a positive attitude;
- Enthusiastic and eager to learn;
- Certified in First Aid (Level 1), WHMIS and confined space entry;
- Creative with the ability to analyze and troubleshoot various problems;
- Safety-conscious with a demonstrated commitment to safe work practices.
