We are accepting applications for two full-time Planner – Long Range students to join our team for a four-month term beginning in May. Reporting to the Manager Long Range Planning and Sustainability, the primary responsibilities of this role include:
- Assisting with gathering and analyzing data for various long-range planning and sustainability projects (e.g. local area plan, climate action, adaptation planning, transportation planning);
- Supporting the development of community engagement strategies for long-range planning, climate change, and sustainability initiatives (e.g. energy efficiency rebate programs, local area plan);
- Under the supervision of the manager, drafting reports, briefing memos, and other correspondence on long-range planning, climate change, and sustainability projects;
- Conducting data and policy analysis to inform policy recommendations;
- Collaborating with various internal departments, under the Manager's guidance, to build effective working relationships;
- Assisting with creating informative and visual materials for public distribution and update planning project information on the CVRD website;
- Supporting staff with project scoping and execution;
- Assisting in researching and preparing grant applications (e.g. active transportation, climate initiatives);
- Contributing to the implementation of ongoing climate change programs and initiatives;
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Our ideal candidate is:
- Currently enrolled in a four-year undergraduate degree program in Planning, or a Master’s degree program in Planning, with at least one year of full-time studies completed;
- An analytical and strategic thinker with strong problem-solving, project management, business planning, and risk management skills;
- A strong communicator with the ability to foster collaborative working relationships and provide effective messaging verbally and in writing;
- Organized with the ability to manage a workload independently, ensuring accountability for deliverables while adhering to work plans and timelines;
- Familiar with provincial legislation relevant to the role, including the Local Government Act and the Climate Change Accountability Act;
- Familiar with local government operations, planning regulations and tools including Official Community Plans, zoning bylaws, and the procedures for bylaw amendments;
- Aware of provincial, regional, and corporate programs, policies, and best practices concerning environmental, regional planning, and corporate strategic planning matters;
- Familiar with sustainability principles, including nature-based solutions, equity, and climate change mitigation and adaptation;
- A strong researcher with the ability to evaluate basic public datasets and perform essential data analysis tasks, linking data and policy to provide a broader context;
- An advanced user of Microsoft Office 365 with strong skills in Adobe Acrobat and SharePoint.
A valid BC Class 5 driver’s license is required for this role. Successful candidates will be required to consent to a Canadian Criminal Record Check.
