We are accepting applications from CVRD CUPE Local 556 employees only for a full-time Leadhand – Wastewater Maintenance position, to join our Wastewater Services team. The Leadhand – Wastewater Maintenance assists the Senior Operator – Wastewater Treatment Facilities (Senior Operator) in organizing and coordinating the department’s daily activities while performing preventative and reactionary maintenance in the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) wastewater systems and ensures that installations and emergency repairs are completed in a timely manner.
Reporting to the Manager of Wastewater Services, the primary responsibilities of this role include:
- Assisting the Senior Operator with the coordination of field-level work by preparing staff and contractor schedules, prioritizing activities, providing guidance and direction, and monitoring work to ensure it is completed in accordance with instructions, standards, and safety regulations.
- Coordinating the maintenance and inspection of process equipment and boilers and adjusting operating equipment as necessary to maintain specified plant performance standards.
- Drafting safety and shutdown procedures for review and final approval by the Senior Operator.
- Directing the day-to-day work of Wastewater Treatment Plant Maintenance Operators and other operators assigned to maintenance activities.
- Supporting the Senior Operator and Occupational Health and Safety Advisor in developing safe work procedures for maintenance tasks performed at wastewater treatment facilities, conveyance facilities, the leachate treatment plant, LFG flares, and the biosolids compost facility.
- Coordinating construction and repair activities by ensuring staff or contractors, materials, equipment, and required safety measures are in place, available, and proper safety requirements are met.
- Completing and maintaining detailed records such as logbooks, maintenance and performance records and parts inventory.
- Reporting plant equipment performance issues and deficiencies to the Senior Operator as required.
- Preparing drawings and tenders for small repair and construction projects; reviewing tenders with the Manager; and providing input on contractor or operator selection.
- Analyzing mechanical system data and equipment performance to meet system requirements and troubleshoot operational issues.
- Providing guidance to operators and contractors on appropriate maintenance procedures related to their duties at the CVWPCC, leachate treatment plant, LFG flares, and biosolids compost facility.
- Maintaining the inventory of mechanical parts; obtaining quotations; and ordering parts and equipment within established purchasing limits.
- Performing major servicing and repairs on wastewater equipment and responding to equipment failures as required.
- Maintaining pumps, blowers, centrifuges, and other wastewater equipment and controls, including precision alignment of motor shafts and couplers.
- Preparing drawings and coordinating and performing welding, fabrication, and alignment work for special projects and equipment repairs.
- Performing the duties of the Sewage Treatment Plant Operator and Wastewater Treatment Plant Maintenance Operator, as required.
- Responding to emergency callouts.
- Performing other assigned duties and projects as required.
Our ideal candidate is:
- Experienced in providing leadership at a leadhand level including scheduling, coordinating and monitoring work.
- Knowledgeable in the procedures, bylaws, codes, regulations, methods, tools and equipment used to operate, maintain, and repair plant equipment with advanced knowledge of wastewater processes as related to wastewater treatment.
- Knowledgeable in the operation, maintenance and repair of wet and dry pit sewage pump stations.
- Adept at troubleshooting and analyzing critical wastewater problems and developing effective solutions, including problem solving on-site and over the phone.
- Comfortable working independently to meet objectives and achieve results.
- A strong communicator with a professional approach and the ability to relate effectively with coworkers, contractors and members of the public.
- Team-oriented with demonstrated leadership ability at a leadhand level.
- Safety-conscious with a demonstrated commitment to safe work practices and considerable knowledge of job hazards and safe work practices.
- Educated in a related field of sciences including completion of two years of related post-secondary courses or 90 CEU’s with a minimum of three years’ directly related experience, including progressive experience operating in a Class 3 or Class 4 wastewater treatment facility (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
- Certified with the Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) in Municipal Wastewater Treatment (Level I) and Interprovincial Red Seal Qualification in a mechanical trade, First Aid Level 1, WHIMIS, and confined space entry.
- Able to safely operate assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Able to use a computer and applicable software related to the work and use mathematical formulas to determine flow, pump curves, dosage and efficiencies.
- Flexible in working extra hours on standby and emergency call-out on a rotational basis and work in inclement weather.
- Preferred qualifications include, Wastewater Treatment II certification, Wastewater Collection I certification (or higher), and relevant dual industrial trade ticket.
A valid BC Class 3 driver’s license with air brake endorsement is required for this role.
Current wage rate of $48.93 per hour.
