Maris Nature Park Donation and Planning Process

In September 2022, the CVRD Board accepted a parkland donation of 40 acres (16 hectares) of oceanfront property in the Merville area to be named Maris Nature Park. The land features intact mature second and old growth forest and currently has no road or trail access.

News Release: Oceanfront Land Donated to CVRD for Park Use

The land was donated by Christopher Investments in memory of its founder, Mr. John E. Feigl and his wife Mrs. Diane Feigl. The donation was made possible through the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) Ecological Gifts Program, which provides a way for owners of ecologically sensitive land to protect nature and leave a legacy for future generations. As per donation guidelines, development options for land donated through the program require ECCC review and approval.

As we work through the management planning process, we ask that the public not access the land and respect the ecological values of the site. We will be updating this project page as we work through the management planning process and will let the public know when and how access to the site will be supported.

Project Timeline

Phase 1: Background Study and Information Collection (In Progress)

CVRD staff will commission studies and prepare background reports and mapping in support of a management planning process for Maris Nature Park. This will include reviewing existing site conditions and performing environmental, archeological and hazard site assessments throughout the property.

Phase 2: Management Planning

Park management planning will start with engaging K’omoks First Nation on how they wish to be involved in the management planning process. Following steps will include the development of a management plan that speaks to the values and constraints of the site, which will support a site plan. Any site plan will need the approval of the ECCC.

Phase 3: Park Opening

The park will be opened for public use following a successful management planning process.
