Shingle Spit Boat Launch

Update - June 2025

Construction for the boat launch will be taking place this summer, with dates to be determined. Staff will be reviewing bid contracts in late June and will determine the construction schedule at that time. Construction is expected to be completed in September.

Background

In 2018, the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) received a Licence of Occupation with the Province to manage and upgrade the boat launch at Shingle Spit. An inspection in 2018 by an engineering firm determined that the boat launch was in an advanced state of disrepair and should be replaced. Since 2018, the CVRD has tried unsuccessfully to find funding through grants to replace the boat launch. The Shingle Spit Boat Launch is the only boat launch on Hornby Island  and provides an important amenity for recreational boaters and for emergency evacuation.

In 2023, funding was secured to design and construct a new launch at Shingle Spit. In 2024, the CVRD is focused on design, permitting and community engagement. Early discussions and meetings with an ad hoc Boat Launch Committee on Hornby have helped develop the design below.
