CVRD Statement: Taking a Stand Against Hate Speech

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) is opposed to any form of racism, misogyny, hate and discrimination within our community. We stand by the K’ómoks First Nation and the First Nations Leadership Council to condemn harmful content referencing the murder victims of a notorious serial killer, that is being promoted in the name of comedy.

“Actions that perpetuate harmful ideologies are not welcome here. Entertainers that visit our community must understand that presenting content which is anti-Indigenous, racist and makes light of gender-based violence constitutes hate speech and that will not be tolerated,” said CVRD Chair Will Cole-Hamilton.

The CVRD stands by families, victims and survivors of violence. Confronting racism, sexism, stereotypes, and myth is an important part of taking collective responsibility for safety. We call upon all community members to stop the spread of hate speech or any content that makes light of violence against Indigenous women, girls and two-spirt people.

The Comox Valley Regional District is a partnership of three electoral areas and three municipalities operating on the unceded traditional territory of the K’ómoks First Nation, the traditional keepers of the land. The members of the regional district work collaboratively on providing sustainable services for the benefit of the diverse urban and rural areas of the Comox Valley.
