Community Heritage Register
The CVRD Community Heritage Register (CHR) is an official list of historic places within the community that have been identified by the CVRD Board as having heritage value, significance, or character. The Register’s primary function is to recognize and celebrate historic places within the community and the contributions made towards a shared understanding of the collective past of the Comox Valley.
“Heritage value” is described by the nominator in a Statement of Significance by relating the building or place to one or more values outlined in the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada: aesthetic, historic or cultural, scientific, social, or spiritual.
The CHR applies to the Vancouver Island portion of Electoral Area A (Baynes Sound, excluding Denman and Hornby Islands, which maintain their own heritage registers), Electoral Area B (Lazo North), and Electoral Area C (Puntledge-Black Creek). These areas are entirely within the traditional and unceded territories of K’ómoks First Nation.
While being listed in the CVRD CHR does not provide the same level of legal protection as a heritage designation bylaw, it is an important tool for recognizing local heritage value. Properties listed in the CHR can be better positioned to access heritage conservation tools and funding while working toward broader goals of public awareness and education.
