Accessibility

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) is taking steps to create connected, accessible and inclusive communities that promote well-being and belonging.

BC Accessibility Act and the Comox Valley Accessibility Framework

In 2021, the Government of British Columbia passed the Accessible British Columbia Act. Under the legislation, regional districts, municipalities and other public bodies are required to establish an accessibility committee, an accessibility plan and a build a tool to receive feedback on accessibility.

The CVRD, Village of Cumberland, Town of Comox and City of Courtenay have partnered to create a shared vision and commitments to remove barriers through the Comox Valley Local Governments Accessibility Framework.  The framework, developed in collaboration with the Comox Valley Social Planning Society and Comox Valley Accessibility Committee, provides overarching guidance to help each of the local governments identify, eliminate and prevent accessibility barriers.

Comox Valley Accessibility Committee

To meet the requirements of the legislation a formal relationship and structure has been established with the Comox Valley Accessibility Committee, a community-based committee that has served as a resource to the broader community for 25 years. Under this arrangement, the Comox Valley local government partners are working with the Committee on their respective assessments, plans and actions concerning accessibility.

In general, the Committee works to identify barriers and best practices, reviews draft plans, engages with the community and works to increase public awareness on issues related to accessibility and inclusion. Membership is open to community members who wish to participate. For information and enquires please email.

Ongoing Work

Following completion of the Comox Valley Accessibility Framework, the CVRD is now working with the Comox Valley Accessibility Committee to identify priorities for assessments and/or plans. Updates will be provided to this webpage as these details are finalized.
