Emergency Response on Mount Washington
The need for improved emergency response services on Mount Washington has continued to be a growing need to better protect the community. Since 2021, the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) has been working to construct a fire hall building that would directly support the emergency response in the region.
Project Update - March 2026
The CVRD has hired Momentum Design Build for construction management services on this project. Construction is expected to begin in May/June 2026 with anticipated completion for October/November.
Construction at the facility will include truck bays to store response vehicles and other firefighting equipment.
Staff are working with the CVRD Recreation department to maximize use of the Mountain Centre to help reduce the cost of the service over time. Existing users such as the Strathcona Nordic Ski Club will continue to have access.
Project Background
The need for improved emergency response services on Mount Washington has continued to be a growing need to better protect the community.
The CVRD took possession of the Vancouver Island Mountain Centre on February 1, 2025 and has been using the space for many functions: training grounds for volunteer firefighters, a community gym for locals in the area, group accommodations for various sports and extra-curricular activities, reunion/wedding venue, and meeting room rentals for fitness and educational purposes.

- February 2025: CVRD Purchases Mount Washington Facility to Support Emergency Response
- The Vancouver Island Mountain Centre will be used as an administrative and indoor training building, with the fire truck bays to be built beside it. A lease for the land beside the Mountain Centre has been developed with Mount Washington Pacific to build the truck bays.
- November 2025: Constructions Plans in Place for Mount Washington Fire Hall
- A Request for Proposal (RFP) for construction management services was released in October 2025, with plans to begin construction following the winter season.
Alternative Approval Process (AAP)
The Board gave direction to move forward with the borrowing and approval process for the project and secured a grant for $900,000 to help reduce the costs for residents and property owners. In April 2022, an Alternative Approval Process (AAP) was completed and more than 10% of eligible voters opposed the borrowing, not allowing the project to proceed.
