National Waste Reduction Week Launches in the Regional District by Celebrating "Tonnes" of Recycling Progress Over the Past Year

The Regional District of Comox-Strathcona (RDCS) is celebrating success in the three Rs—reducing, reusing and recycling—as it takes part in National Waste Reduction Week, October 17 – 23, 2005.

“Over the past three years we’ve seen a substantial increase in the amount of recycling that is taking place in the RDCS,” said Jim Abram, chair of the regional district board. “Our recycling programs—from the bins you see in your communities, to our two compost education centres, to the education programs we do in the schools—are having a positive effect.”

In the past three years, residents within the Regional District of Comox-Strathcona have:
· Reduced green house gas emissions by over 2200 tonnes by composting over 6,000 tonnes of food and yard waste
· Introduced composting to new friends and neighbours: it’s estimated that over 10,000 people now have composters at work in their homes and businesses in the regional district
· Diverted 14, 339 tonnes of waste from the landfill by recycling plastics, paper, glass and other acceptable items
· Recycled toxic waste items by bringing in over 20 tonnes of batteries, ballasts & cell phones, and about 50 tonnes of old computers

To celebrate this week, the Regional District of Comox-Strathcona is helping to launch a new in-office composting program at the offices of the BC Access centre in Courtenay, moving the old Comox Valley Compost Education site to its new location on Headquarters Road, and launching a new recycling bin facility on Quadra Island.

The theme of this year’s week-long national campaign is “Too Good to Waste.” The goal of the week is to invite Canadians to ask themselves how they are protecting their environment by conserving resources, reusing materials and recycling.

The Regional District of Comox-Strathcona is a partnership of nine electoral areas and eight municipalities providing nearly 100,000 residents with over 140 services–from parks to full-service sports facilities to regional solid waste systems.
