Sports Centre Reno Rendering

Building for the Future
Construction crews will be in full operation at the sports centre this spring and summer revitalizing the complex and adding to its accessibility.  The contractor will be working closely with the CVRD to ensure that sports centre wellness centre patrons can continue their fitness routine right through the summer.  To allow swimmers to enjoy their favorite water activities, the aquatic centre will have an extend summer season from June to mid-August.

Highlights include:

  • renovations to the change rooms, seating area in arena #1
  • renovations to the pool area and change rooms to make the amenities fully wheelchair accessible
  • upgrades to the mechanical infrastructure such as air conditioning, heaters, exhaust fans and fire protection fixtures.
  • addition of a twenty person hot tub and spa area

Plans for the site ensure the renewed facility is welcoming and friendly, a place where people can come together for recreation and social activities in an accessible, functional and welcoming environment. The construction schedule anticipates the sports centre re-opening in fall of 2010.

Stay tuned to this page for updates on the construction progress.

Uncovering the unexpected has certainly been a common thread throughout the first phase of the sports centre renovation. The part of the project relating to the removal of the asbestos and lead based paint is nearing completion. The excavation and back fill of the old pool deck in preparation for the new hot tub and spa area, was more complicated than originally thought due to loose soil conditions. This has been resolved through the addition of a concrete slab below the new hot tub area. There also are some pipes that needed to be replaced that weren’t originally anticipated. The team remains committed to working through the project as soon as possible to provide some great new additions to the sports centre.

This week marked the 100 day countdown to the Comox Valley and Campbell River 2010 BC Seniors Games that will be jointly hosted by
Comox Valley and Campbell River, September 15 through 18, 2010. During these four days, the newly renovated sports centre will become the athletes village and host the senior’s hockey games.  Demolition of the sports centre areas to be renovated continues to progress. The pool deck was removed this week and work started on rerouting the electrical to accommodate the new 20 person hot tub.

May 30th marked the 27th anniversary of the Comox Valley Tri-K and what a great way to send off the sports centre pool as we know it – full of fun, fitness and community spirit. Now that the pool, tot pool, hot tub sauna are closed, the renovation in that area can move ahead.
Preparation for demolition is already underway. Staff are busy clearing out storage areas and offices and the water lines and mechanical equipment are being shut down. Hoarding around areas not scheduled for renovation is going up this week. Demolition of the sauna, tot pool, hot tub and pool washrooms are next on the construction schedule.

If you have been around the sports centre the last couple of weeks you will have noticed the barricading of areas and heard the rat-a-tat of the jack hammer. This is in preparation for the next phase of demolition and in preparation for construction.

The exterior walls of dressing rooms #2 and #4 are scheduled to be removed next week and big machines will be moved in to cut and remove the existing slab. Early in June, demolition will start in the pool area.
