Solid Waste Management Plan
This year, the Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) service is updating its solid waste management plan – a plan that will provide direction for how we manage our waste over the next 20 years. It’s necessary; it’s required by the province, but more importantly, it will provide the steps we need to take to manage our garbage and recyclables. A big part of the plan includes a “Zero Waste” approach to managing our waste - how we can reduce and reuse waste rather than just build new landfills
About Zero Waste
Zero waste goes beyond recycling by taking a “whole system” approach e.g. better designed packaging to make it easier to reuse or recycle, or changing purchasing habits to avoid buying items with excess packaging. Zero waste does not mean that no waste will be landfilled or produced, but that communities will continuously strive to reduce the waste going to landfill by adopting aggressive waste reduction policies.
Public Input is Key
The solid waste plan is being developed with input from an advisory committee as well as the public to ensure that it represents the broad needs and the interests of all of our communities. The advisory committee is meeting several times over the year to review various ideas and options for reducing and managing waste, as well as ways to get feedback from our communities. See below for the meeting minutes, presentations and background info.
The process of gathering feedback started in spring 2010 with a public survey. Click here for the public survey results.
Next steps
Once ideas and options for managing waste have been identified, we’ll be hosting a series of open houses to get community feedback, along with another public survey. The goal is to create a plan with input from residents and businesses that will meet our needs for managing waste – for the good of our communities, our environment and is fiscally responsible.
