August 2012 Royston Waterlot - Pilings Removal Project The pilings at the former Interfor booming ground at Royston are to be removed as a condition of surrendering the waterlot lease. This work is mandated by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources Operations. The project will start August 13, 2012, and is expected to be completed in less than two weeks. The hours of work will normally be between noon and midnight, which corresponds with tides necessary to conduct this work. In addition, to help minimize environmental impact there may be some occasions where the hours of operation may extend either before or after this time period to coincide with favourable tides.
The pilings adjacent to the sunken ship breakwater will not be disturbed, to protect the marine archaeological value of the site. For more information about the history of these ships contact the Underwater Archaeological Society of BC. A few of the pilings will also be retained for the purposes of providing Purple Martin bird nesting habitat. The group responsible for these birdhouses is the BC Purple Martin Stewardship and Recovery Program, Georgia Basin Ecological Assessment and Restoration Society.
