Cumberland, BC – The Village of Cumberland and the City of Courtenay, Town of Comox and the Comox Valley Electoral Areas A (Baynes Sound – Denman/Hornby Islands), Area B (Lazo North), and Area C (Puntledge – Black Creek) in the Comox Valley economic development service have reached an agreement that allows for the Village of Cumberland to withdraw from the economic development function of the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD).
“Even though the Village of Cumberland is withdrawing from this service, we will continue to work together, to grow and promote suitable economic development for our communities,” explains CVRD Board Chair Jolliffe.
The terms of the withdrawal include Cumberland paying $40,000 per year into the service for the years 2016 to 2019, with withdrawal from the service taking place in 2016. The Village representative on the Comox Valley Economic Development Society will also be resigning their position effective immediately.
“Developing a new model of providing economic development services is a strategic priority of the Village,” said Mayor Leslie Baird. “By withdrawing from the economic development service of the CVRD we’re now able to explore this in more detail.”
The CVRD has been contracting with the Comox Valley Economic Development Society since 1988 and is in a current contract until 2020 to deliver economic services including the Vancouver Island visitor centre, destination marketing as well as many other strategic priorities for our region.
