Free Cycling Skills Courses for CVRD Rural Residents

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and the Comox Valley Cycling Coalition are offering free cycling courses for residents of the regional district’s electoral areas ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ on Saturday June 22, 2013 from 12:00 to 4:30 p.m. in the Aquarium Room of the Comox Valley sports centre, and on Tuesday June 25 from 9:00 to 4:30 p.m. in the Tsolum Building of the Lewis Centre’.

These courses are designed for those who can ride a bike but are not totally comfortable riding on public roads. It combines classroom and on-road training to give you the skills and information you need to take your bike on the road – and enjoy it!

You will learn how to cycle safely and confidently. The course takes you through the most common situations you’ll face when you ride your bike. It also provides you with tips to make cycling a fun and regular part of your life. You’ll learn to:

• manoeuver your bike effectively
• determine the best place on the road to ride
• communicate with other road users
• check your bike for safety
• adjust your bike to fit you
• do, or at least know about basic bike maintenance
• choose equipment and clothing
• plan the best routes
• handle weather and riding at night

Requirements for the course

• participants must reside in one of the three electoral areas of the CVRD
• participants must be able to ride a bike
• your bike must be in good working order and you must have an approved cycling helmet
• participants must be prepared to ride in any weather
• bring a lunch and something to drink
• there must be a minimum of six and a maximum of 12 participants
• all participants need to register and receive confirmation from CVRD to attend the course
