CVRD Invites Public Input on Denman Cross-Island Trail

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) is inviting public comment on a proposed route for the Denman cross-island trail along both Denman and East roads, as well as on construction phasing for this multi-year project.

Denman residents' input will be sought at a community open house on Wednesday, January 16 from 5 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Denman Community Hall at 1196 Northwest Road.  Presentations on the proposed plan will take place at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. and will be followed with a discussion period.

The Denman cross-island trail was identified as a top priority for the CVRD during the planning process for the Denman Island parks and greenways master plan, adopted in August 2011.  For more information see

“The intent for the cross-island trail is to provide a safe route for pedestrians, cyclists and horseback riders to travel across the island between the two ferry terminals and points of interest in-between, ” said Bruce Jolliffe, CVRD's director for Baynes Sound-Denman/Hornby Islands (Area ‘A') . “We encourage residents to participate by asking questions and providing feedback on this project.”

For most of its length, the proposed route is within the Denman, Corrigal and East road rights-of-way and runs alongside the existing road system.  Where possible, the trail will be a two-metre wide packed gravel path to allow for two people to walk side by side and will be separated from the road pavement by a 30 – 60 cm wide vegetated strip.  Depending on the terrain and available width of the road right-of-way, the trail may need to narrow in sections and cross the road a few times.  The goal is to have the fewest crossings possible and keep the trail at a constant width.
