At the regional solid waste board meeting on June 21, 2012, the Comox Strathcona waste management (CSWM) board approved a new fee structure for disposal of waste at the Comox Valley and Campbell River waste management centres.
The CSWM board is currently considering increasing the tipping fees effective January 1, 2013 to offset operational costs which cover not only the two waste management centres in Campbell River and Cumberland, but also the operations of the Tahsis and Zeballos landfills, Gold River transfer station and landfill, as well as the Cortes and Hornby Island transfer stations. In addition to these facilities, tipping fees collected at the two waste management centres also fund the multi-bin recycling depot system, the compost education centres in Courtenay and Campbell River, waste reduction education and road maintenance.
“The board requested more information from staff on the minimum rate charge and load size for local residential customers for possible consideration at the September meeting. However, an increase was approved for municipal solid waste from $80 per metric tonne to $90 per metric tonne and construction demolition waste from $90 per metric tonne to $100 per metric tonne. These increases should allow for a balanced 2013 operating budget as well as allocate reserve funds for future capital projects,” said Tom Boatman, CSWM's manager of solid waste services.
Future capital projects include improvements to gas collection, leachate collection, storm water facilities and for closure plans for existing landfills.
The fee structure categories offer diversion incentives to help preserve landfill capacity for the future and are consistent with the regional solid waste management plan. For more information on the current schedule of fees as well as those included in the recommended bylaw visit www.cswm.ca/fees.
The Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) service is a function of the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and is responsible for two regional waste management centres that serve the Comox Valley and Campbell River, as well as a range of transfer stations and smaller waste-handling and recycling facilities for the electoral areas of the CVRD and the Strathcona Regional District. The CSWM service manages over 100,000 tonnes of waste and recycled material and oversees a number of diversion and education programs.
