The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) would like to inform residents and commercial customers that there is still plenty of SkyRocket, a nutrient-rich soil amendment for lawn and gardens, available for purchase.
Roughly 1500 cubic metres (2000 cubic yards) of this unique soil amendment, made of wood chips mixed with biosolids, is ready to buy on a first-come, first-served basis.
“SkyRocket is available for commercial as well as small haulers. The small loads are there to accommodate people with pickup trucks or utility trailers, so it's a good opportunity for residents to split a load with neighbours, family or friends,” said Marc Rutten, CVRD's senior manager of engineering services. “The application of SkyRocket has proven successful in promoting healthy plant growth and the results are visibly noticeable when you visit the Comox Valley compost education centre.”
Residents are encouraged to visit the comparative beds at the compost education centre at 4795 Headquarters Road in Courtenay to see the demonstration gardens of flowers and grasses grown using SkyRocket compared to that grown using fish soil or topsoil. Each bed is treated the same way and watered equally throughout the summer.
SkyRocket is tested prior to going to market; the CVRD does micro-bacteriological testing for coliform bacteria as well as testing for metals (lead, mercury, chromium, copper, etc.). SkyRocket is regulated by the provincial government's Organic Matter Recycling Regulation (OMRR). As well, it meets the requirement under the “fertilizer act” administered by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
SkyRocket can be picked up in bulk at the Comox Valley waste management centre located at 2400 Pidgeon Lake Road, Cumberland. Payment is by cash, cheque, credit or debit card. Hours of purchase and loading are Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cost per cubic yard: There is a minimum charge of $50.00 + HST
