Garbage and Recycling Program
On September 24th, the CVRD board of directors approved a resolution to enter into a contract with BFI Canada for a weekly roadside garbage and recycling program in electoral areas A, B and C, subject to electoral approval by way of a referendum scheduled for Saturday, November 16th, 2013.
If approved, all residential properties within the service area would receive the service, except for apartment buildings with more than 4 units and mobile home parks. The service area includes electoral areas A, B and C, excluding Denman Island, Hornby Island, the Royston collection area (which already has such a service) and the Mount Washington resort community.
The proposed service would include weekly pick-up of garbage (up to one 80L can) and recycling (unlimited quantities). The initial service contract with BFI Canada would be for a period of three years at a cost of approximately $150 per household, per year. If approved, service would commence in September, 2014 once the bylaw [PDF - 364 KB] is formally established and approved as part of the annual financial plan.
