Q. When is the Hornby Island Fire Hall project referendum?
A. The referendum is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Hornby Island elementary school. There is also advance voting  on April 8, 2015 at the Hornby Island community hall and special voting dates at the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) board room in Courtenay.  See voting times and locations on the Voting Information page.

Q. Can I vote by mail?
A. Yes, qualified electors may vote by mail if they have a physical disability, illness or injury that affects their ability to vote at another voting opportunity, or if they expect to be absent from the CVRD on general voting day and at the times of all advance voting opportunities.

A mail ballot application package can be requested by contacting the CVRD office for an “Application to vote by mail [PDF - 101 KB]” in person at 600 Comox Road, Courtenay, BC, by phone at (250-334-6070) or by email at administration@comoxvalleyrd.ca.

Q. When are the mail ballots due?
A. Mail ballot packages will be ready on or about March 15.  For those that require the vote by mail option please fill out an application form and one will be sent to you.  Mail ballot voting will be available up to Friday, April 17.   For those voting using this method please acknowledge that ballots and applicable information must be submitted to the chief election officer at the CVRD office no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 17, 2015.

Q. What is the question on the ballot?
A. Voters will be asked to vote “YES” or “NO” to the following question on the ballot:

Are you in favour of the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) adopting Bylaw No. 362 being “Hornby Island Fire Protection Service (Fire Hall Construction) Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 362, 2015” to enable the CVRD to borrow $1,600,000 to construct a fire hall on Hornby Island?

Q. Do I need to pre-register to vote?
A. There is no need to pre-register to vote, as the registration of all electors for this referendum will take place at the time of voting. The Comox Valley Regional District uses “voting day only registration” and therefore does not maintain a voters list. If you are voting by mail, please contact the CVRD office for an “Application to vote by mail [PDF - 204 KB]” in person at 600 Comox Road, Courtenay, BC, by phone at (250-334-6070) or by email at administration@comoxvalleyrd.ca.

Q. Who can vote?
A. The voter must meet the following qualifications and be required to make a declaration the following requirements are met:

  • be a Canadian Citizen
  • be 18 years of age or older
  • be a resident of  British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately preceding voting day
  • be a resident or registered owner of property in the Hornby Island fire protection service area for at least 30 days immediately preceding voting day
    Note:  If there is more than one registered owner of the property, only one of those individuals may, with the written consent of the majority of the owners, register as a non-resident property elector.
  • not be disqualified by law from voting.

Q. What do I need to bring on voting day?

  • Resident electors will be required to produce two pieces of identification (at least one with a signature). Picture identification is not necessary.  The identification must prove both residency and identity.
     
  • Non-resident property electors must produce two pieces of identification (at least one with a signature) to prove identity, proof that they are entitled to register in relation to the property, and, if applicable, written consent from the other property owners. Non-resident property elector certificates will be available at all voting locations on general voting day and during advance voting. Non-resident property electors are strongly encouraged to contact the CVRD before voting day to confirm eligibility and documentation requirements.

    Note:  If there is more than one registered owner of the property, only one of those individuals may, with the written consent of the majority of the owners, register as a non-resident property elector.
